mula sa mga tagiliran nilang butas.

MEXICO, PAMPANGA. The town’s name is said to have originated from the word “masico” which means the abundance of water. It was later translated by the Spaniards into its current form. Another account is the town was called Nuevo Mexico because of its similarity to Mexico City or because it was founded by Mexican immigrants.
Mexico was accepted by the Augustinians as an ecclesiastical mission in 1581. There are currently no information on who built the first parochial structures that have been reported to be heavily damaged in the earthquakes of 1645 and 1658. The church was probably rebuilt in 1665, and then perhaps rebuilt or restored again at around 1689 by Fr. Jose dela Cruz (OSA), repaired again in 1778 and at around 1863, before finally being severely damaged in the earthquake of 1880. The church was never restored and only the bell tower remained of the old structure.
